Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to know z&h?

You may want to have a look in our calendar, look for an event and visit us. The monthly dinner is an ideal event to start with, as you don't have to register for it.

Once at an even it's due to yourself to take the initiative and talk to people. Ask someone about their study subject or something else. Maybe someone will even start a conversation with you on their behalf, ask if it's your first time around; however you better do not expect this. Make the first step. It would be a pity if you would leave in the end without having talked to others.

You may also bring some of your gay friends if you wish. Sometimes it will need a second try, as it does mostly. But it is worth it. Most of our members have been able to find friends at z&h.

If you like z&h, why not becoming a member? As a member, you get the monthly dinner for free and you will receive our programme via mail.

More questions? Don't hesitate to ask us.

Do I need to register for the dinner and for the other events?

You don't have to register for the monthly dinner and the movie nights – just visit us.

For some of the other events, a registration is required, so that we can estimate how many people will attend the event. Details to the events and the registration will be made public with a newsletter.

How do I remain up-to-date on the events?

You can find our future events in our calendar.

Our newsletter is a must-have. We use it to inform you about event details, event updates, registration links and more.

If you're a member of the association, you will receive our programme at the start of the new semester with your mail. You may also download our programme here.

Is z&h a support group?

No, it isn't. z&h is just a place for like-minded gay and bisexual students in Zurich, where they can meet other gay students and have a good time together.

If you're looking for counselling and support, visit and contact HAZ or Rainbowline.

Do I need to be openly gay to participate?

No, you don't. It is up to, and you alone, if you want to come out and towards whom. However it might be possible that you encounter people you know at z&h – which means they're also gay or bisexual, so this shouldn't be a problem.

The information on our members is save with us, we don't share it. Also, we will never take photographs without the consent of the present people.

Is this only for social inept students?

Visit us and have a look around at our events – we are confident you will be able to deny this question with a firm "no" ;-)

Is z&h kind of a dating platform?

z&h is not more or less a dating platform as every other association in Switzerland. The atmosphere at our events is social. If you want to cruise or hook up, you may better go to a bar or club. Of course you'll meet other gays at z&h – maybe even Mr Right or Mr Right Now – it's entirely up to you.

Is this for me, if I'm already in a relationship?

Ask yourself: Don't you go out with friends anymore, or don't you go to the cinema or to your sports club anymore – just because you're in a relationship? See: It's about social contacts and so is z&h. Over time, you may be able to find new friends at z&h and our events are a good occasion to meet friends and do something together.

How many people attend your events? Are those always the same?

That's quite different most of the time. The monthly dinners are our most visited events with 20 to 40 people each time, the other events are less frequented.

Totally, z&h has around 60 paying members as of now, but we have more than 420 email adresses on our newsletter list.

Some of our members are regular guests and some even have come for years. However there are always new faces to our events and some of them return regularly.

If you're new to z&h, it shouldn't be a big problem to make first constacts. Just talkt to someboy or bring a friend with you.

What is the average age of attending students?

Most of them are between 20 and 30 years old. However there are students in their first semester as well as PhD students or Alumni – you'll meet a big variety of different people at our events.

Is it possible to participate as a junior/senior/PhD/alumni student?

Have you just started with your studies? Or are you already a PhD student? We don't care. Everyone is welcome.

Is this also for students of other universities than Uni Zurich and ETH?

Yes. Of course students of other universities and universities of applied sciences are also welcome.

What does it cost?

If you're a regular to our events, we kindly ask you to become a member of our association. The semester fee is CHF 20.

Some of our events are self-financed, i.e. the participants pay a small fee to cover the costs. At the z&h dinner you can have dinner for free as a member but you have to pay CHF 10 as a non-member. Some of the other events are free.

How can I become a member?

You can register for the membership here. The membership fee is 20 CHF per semester. You'll receive a programme with a payment slip by mail (in a neutral envelope). As member, you don't have any duties (besides paying the semester fee). You can cancel your subscription anytime. As a member you have advantages, for instance you can have dinner for free at the monthly dinner.
